This is my favorite video

It depends though. Some covers are better than the originals. I believe even Dylan preferred Hendrix’ cover of “All Along the Watchtower”. Some samples are used brilliantly. I thought Jessica Simpson’s “I Think I’m in Love” used a sample of “Jack and Diane” in a really interesting way. But often samples are just lifted and dropped in as an attention getter. Or sometimes just in the background because recording a new bass track was too much effort. I have no problem with the theory of sampling. But I do have a problem with the implementation a lot of the time.

Sooo ... The KKK were anti cultural appropriation

I'm not quite sure that a white gospel/soul singer is cultural appropriation.

I hate sampling. The only thing I would use is my own samples and sound. Be fucking creative and come up with your own shit. Stop copying off motherfuckers please. It's old, boring, and just dull. You are really not a producer. You have to earn the label. Sorry, but not sorry.

Daft punk and Justice are the kings of sampling .

Kanye didn't sample Ray Charles, he sampled Jamie Foxx from Ray doing a Ray Charles impression.

That “What a Man” story gets me misty-eyed every time!!!

The ability to think abstract thoughts is what separates humans from other animals--i.e. you can step back from the literal meaning of something and understand concepts and put things together without having to think about an actual physical example you've seen. Music may be something found in nature, but only humans can contemplate music theory and understand why something is considered music.

Thanks so much for this!

It was a Mos Def track that put me on to an Aretha classic. And man am I grateful.

Ummm how does one prove self-awareness? I usually say language as my answer to that question(since without language a species can't pass on much information between generations.)

I'd ask "no Ma Baker," but I'd imagine we're at the point where no fewer people, at least in your target demographic, know that song than the song that samples it.
1980rlquinn (2 months ago)
Didn't Kirby Ferguson already talk about these tracks in his documentary, "Everything is a Remix"? There may be "nothing new under the sun," but you can still give credit where credit is due.

?Questlove?, The drummer for the Roots plays a DJ set (spins) from time to time at various Hip Hop clubs around the world. In these set he beautifully mixes and mashes mostly classic to new hip hop records with the track from which the producer sampled. First he would play the original match the beats of the hip hop track, fade out the original then once your mind gets blown he'll slowly mix in the original so there's a perfectly mashed up track, which he then blends in another originally sampled track from another dope hip hop song. I was lucky enough to dance my ass of to one of his sets in Seattle.

A very well-put-together video sir. I have so much trouble articulating to others as to why I subscribe to your videos and why they should to. After watching this video, I find myself pointing at my laptop screen going...this....thats why....this thing....hey honey come in here....this...that.
seeinlay4details (4 months ago)
I loved the concept but if you do another video like this, it would be great if you played the original song without talking over it for a moment? I absolutely couldn't separate out the two sounds and had to google the originals.

Sampling done right is a beautiful way of acknowledging your predecessors and bringing their music back to new audiences(Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, and I'd even argue Nikki Minaj do it right). But then there is outright stealing without credit or respect. That's where I have a problem.
Capt. Dave (5 months ago)
There's a path from Cow Cow Boogie to Train Kept A-Rollin'. Then there's all the old blues that Zeppelin covered.

The origins of sampling were not in theft. Many DJs in low income urban areas had records and turntables to make music with. That was it. They made enough money to live off of by DJing and didn't have enough money to buy instruments, so they literally created music with what they had. A lot of people don't understand what goes into sampling WELL. When a creative artist samples something, they don't just find 4 bars of a recording and loop it. They find 4 or 5 different samples that all fit together and they layer them in a way that you might not even be able to recognize them anymore, and find another 10 small sounds that they can add into the song throughout it's duration. Essential listening in this realm is "Endtroducing," an album by DJ Shadow. It's an amazing experience from start to finish.

Hank, one of things that makes human human that's been proposed by psychologists is lying. Not just deception, but lying. Daniel Dennett talks about it too.

I appreciate the fact that you turned a simple topic into a video of reasonable time. Most creators will take a video and stretch it out as long as possible, even if the topic could be discussed in a mere 2 minutes.

Except kanye didnt sample ray charles he had jamie foxx sing it.
MightandMagic88 (6 months ago)

I have a good one - All by Myself by Eric Carmen (or Celine Dion - whichever one you know). That melody is from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto no. II, Adagion Sostenuto.
