So you want to live to be 100? The answers to living a long and happy life may come from Japan which has the longest average life expectancy in the world (83.84 years) and where 2 million people are over the age of 90. Believe it or not, 6 of the top 10 oldest people alive are from Japan including Nabi Tajima of Kagoshima who is 117 years old and the last human alive born in the 19th century!
How did so many Japanese get to live so long?
What are some of the things Japanese do right?
In this episode, John travels to Tottori Prefecture to the area around Mt Daisen where his friend Tomiko-san gives him some advice about how to live a long life and how she's lived to be 106 years old and still working on the farm!
She started to make tofu in the 1950s when doctors said residents had to reduce high blood pressure. She made her own tofu for her family and her diet combined with good habits including staying busy and working hard have strengthened her mind and body. She still walks and writes tanka poetry.
I also ask Mr. Seiichi, my 97 year old Japanese neighbor his secret and hear from a Shinto priest about his thoughts and personal experiences with living a very long and happy life in Japan.
It's impossible to say exactly what has led to Japan having the longest average life expectancy in the world but these things may help:
★ Green Tea
★ Less fatty foods
★ Fermented foods
★ Bath culture / Hot Springs & Onsen
★ Smaller portions
★ Education on personal responsibility
★ National safety / low crime rates
★ Respect for the Elderly (It's a national holiday too!)
Special thank you to Daisen Town & Yonago City in Tottori Prefecture for the help. Daisen is celebrating its 1300th anniversary this year and you're invited to the party in June 2018! http://www.daisen1300.org/
Always thankful for TeknoAXE (Matthew Huffaker)

Secret to living a long life?
2:20 *Be Female*
Seriously, have a look at the lists yourselves, its dominated by women.
Top ten oldest people of all time are all women.
Way to go ladies! Long live women!
I leave for 20 years here in JAPAN and I worked a care giver I seen the old japanese people still alive at aged of105 to 110 but they look sad they can't move even if going to eat they not a normal .that why for me I want to die at age of 75 I dont want to live a long life.maybe the other's dont know japan country is very sad country .
He said 4am and my eyes went up. How sad because growing up in Africa, we woke up at 5a in the morning to do chores before getting ready for school. We also had chores at school. Most schools didn’t have janitors. Students were responsible for helping keep clean the school yards, bathrooms, classrooms etc., mane how things have changed. Such disciple installed hardwork ethics in a person from an early age
We're all interested in living a long life, we watch and research how to get to be 100, we ask old people what's the secret...I think our interest should be in how to live a life that others will remember, how to impact in a good way others, how to be happier and spending our time in a more productive way. It's not the years in someone's life it's how he/she lived. What's it worth if you live to be 100 and be full or regrets and sorrow? In the end were immortal in the memory of the people that loved us and who's life we touched!
John you make a good point about questioning if today's Japanese will live as long as their grand or great grand parents - cuz of western influence. But barring that consideration, I think most Eastern Asians have similar diets - emphasis on vegetables, forms of exercise, life-balance, etc. Koreans have a diet high in fish and fermented foods and soups, similar to Japanese. The Chinese tend to sautee or boil foods with their woks, along with steamed foods - and like the japanese, enjoy noodle dishes frequently. Everyone drinks tea - green tea, oolong tea, jasmine tea, etc. So why are the Chinese and Koreans no where near as long-living as Japanese? I suspect that one of your items - the onsen - is the reason. Of all the East Asians, only the Japanese have that onsen culture. Those baths and minerals in the baths, I think, makes a difference.
" Fish and lean meats" Nope. Thats a huge myth. Lean meat or fatty meat don't do the body good. As for fish, it's just another animal flesh. The oceans have become our toxic waste dump and toilets. We are also eating everything that swims and the Japanese are bad offenders when it comes to that. Theres a reason some tuna are $ 50000+ a piece and thats because they are going extinct. Shame on anyone promoting fish as healthy !
We are all born with a disease that has a 100% mortality rate - death. You can eat healthy, exercise, and do all sorts of things but no one can add years to their life, as they are already numbered.
So many people focus on how to extend their lives as long as possible rather than thinking about how they can prepare for what happens after they die. Luckily, you don’t have to be afraid of death, as Christ has already conquered it (1 Corinthians 15:55-57). I know where I’m going when I die, so if die today, I’m ready for tomorrow.
Of course I’d love for you to put your faith in Christ so you can feel the same and not stress so much about how to live as long as possible, but even if you choose not to I at least encourage you to think about what happens after our lives end, because you will be dead far longer than you will be alive.
On the real though, some of those old people look in better shape than I do! lol 😂 Have a great day!
I'm English and my wife is Japanese. She's 52 now and in the last 22 years, has only been to see the Doctor once! for something minor. I on the other hand have an Encyclopaedic medical file. Going at least times a year.
Their food it full of nutrients that other countries don't have in there food as well as the fermented food & sea veggies. They get minerals in the soil from the ocean & they probably still use wood ash in the garden as well as in some of their food. I think exercise has very little to do with living long, it's way more about getting all the vitamins & minerals your body needs, there are many minerals that people don't get in there diets because it's not in the soils & the food or even in the supplements.... A lot of western diseases are caused by getting too much calcium & not enough of the nutrients for their bodies to put it in the right places. The soft tissues & blood vessels get calcified as well as clogged by calcium build up. So much packaging food is fortified with calcium & synthetic vitamins that don't work right like the actual nutrient. Like the difference between folate & folic acid, some people's bodies are a lot more sensitive to this difference.
I am Italian. According to United Nations, Japanese and Italian people have the longest life expectancy in the world. Different food, religion, culture. Japan has been closed to foreign people until the 17th century. Italy has been open to foreigners during Roman Empire and afterwards to occupants coming from different countries. Japan has been mixed with foreigners for a very little part. Italians have been mixed for thousands of years. Life expectancy is a good challege for me...
One important reason is that Japan has a health insurance system different from other countries. I don't say it is a best or better system. Many Japanese old people go to clinics almost everyday but pay very little because of the system. The system is one of the biggest reasonｓ of gigantic Japanese government debt.
One can easily become fixed on trying to live super long lives. I have to wonder though if the worrying excessively over it does not significantly lower the quality of life ....I mean stressing about all the things that MIGHT shorten or lengthen your life? And most of it is theory ...guesses. I just wonder if it is not far more productive to focus on a right attitude about aging dying to begin with. Instead of living in continual fear of toxins and various environmental influences, instead accepting the inevitable and looking forward to whatever eternity might hold.
I mean really how much is one getting in the deal if one manages to live to be 110 years old? After 80 years old? How much quality of life is there even left? Like an extra THIRTY YEARS of being frail and not all there in so many ways? Don't get me wrong I am not knocking living to be very old...I'll take it if it is mine, all i am suggesting though is that it might not be the best thing that could happen to a person. Maybe living a short but wild and highly rewarding life is better? I'm in my 60's and I admit to worrying over how much time I have left...but I think I am even more regretful for choices I have made so far....If I were given a choice between a guaranteed continued life to age 110? OR if I were allowed to start my life over again vaguely knowing what I know now, but with a young death age? Pretty sure I would choose THAT. A childhood friend of mine died at 50 of cancer and I felt bad for his life being cut so short, but I know this man lived in the fast lane and did a LOT MORE living than I really did....he was fearless in forming relationships and so he had a whirlwind of love affairs..tons of friends and social engagements continually ....I on the other hand was ever the fearful procrastinator.
Yeah I would choose the do over to die in my 40's in a heartbeat over simply living another 40 years old as an old man. But what the hay....no one knows what tomorrow brings...it's a day to day mystery. You can worry about or not worry about longevity and yet still either die to tomorrow WHATEVER cause? Or defy statistics and live many more years.... Would it be better though if you could know how much time was left? Or better even KNOW for a fact that there really is no end? That conscience existence just continues? That there is eternal assurance that things can and will be good if not at the moment, then in the future? The Bible in one of my most favorite passages states that "salvation is by HOPE" Think of that a moment? Saved FROM something simply knowing there is HOPE? Saved from dismal hopelessness with HOPE! ?? That passages continues by letting the reader understand that "hope" by definition involves the UNKNOWN ....the yet to be seen...vastly different from "knowing", "Hoping" involves NOT KNOWING...You can almost translate "hope" with some form of statement "NOT knowing"...like NOT knowing it is going to be bad....saved FROM knowing it will be bad by the confidence of NOT KNOWING....just that makes everything possible again! Here is that passage~~> [Romans 8:24-26 ".... For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is NOT hope: for what a man sees, why would he yet hope for? 25 But IF we hope for that we see not, [then] do we with patience wait for [it]. 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know NOT what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which can NOT be uttered..." Now either I am crazy or this passage makes LYING hippocrits of so many people with their religions ...they CLAIM to "see"...or to "know" things that IF they would be honest are merely guesses....guesses construed AS fact and then termed one's "faith" ...yet what I read (and what makes honest sense) is that true honest "faith" Read Hebrews 11:1 "..Now faith IS the substance of things HOPED for, the evidence of things NOT seen..." (NOT seen meaning NOT known in other words) One in other words can NOT honestly declare to "see" what can not be seen...but that over and over again is the huge lie of various religions ...each saying "we DO see, do KNOW that OUR doctrine is RIGHT (righteous) and not all these others"....see how "hope" is removed and replaced with lies? Gambling one's eternal status on a lie??
"Light" then BECOMES understanding the HOPE in honesty...I am constrained to believe/hope in THAT ... Which necessitates my rejecting EVERY religion on earth save the religion of mercy and HOPE...something not defined by any corporate assembly of human beings pretending to have the mind of God. I pin my HOPE on some sort of reward or recompense for finally wanting to be honest resting IN the HOPE that there truly is an over guiding Spirit who recompenses lies and honesty...and dear reader please please do not assume when I say "honesty" that I am speaking simply of day to day transactions of speech and commerce ...no I specifically mean honesty related to the unknown. YES we all should all be honest in dealings and speaking just as we would want people to be honest with us ....DUHH! But can you see how a person could be at the same moment a totally honest person regarding the laws of men while being a dirty filthy rotten LIAR in his/her religious "confession"? How can this not be HUGE? And yet as a matter of respect people are told it is all "good" ...how can lies ever be good? And I say if any mortal human being is SWEARING that THEIR choice in religion is RIGHT (righteous)? Insisting that their choice of what to believe IS infallibly RIGHT? This is HUGE if you ask me! Seriously why or why is it so unthinkable for so many people to simply be honest? It goes for all the big religions but also the atheist as well....ANYONE swearing to "KNOW" as fact things that they mortal FALLIBLE human beings can NOT possibly "know" or "see" or have any honest right to swear to AS right?...I love the Bible because I believe it teaches NOT to swear falsely...in spite of billions of people misusing the words to support what they swear to? I believe it openly condemns them.
First off, I must say i loved your video. Seeing you speak Japanese was a complete surprise. I thought it was going to be a vid completely in English. Moving on, i must say that you talking with that first old lady was adorable. It reminded me of someone that I loved with my life and is not with us anymore.
I had always been curious about the process for making tofu but never really tried to watch any videos. So, I must say that watching that old prepare it was really nice. I was completely focused in everything he did to the point that i think I could try to prepare it myself without having to look at your video. I simply do not have the tools. Then, the kid trying to help make the tofu. He was really cute and I am going to stop right here because i do not need to say more about your great vid. Oh, yes. One thing: HOW CAN PEOPLE DISLIKE SUCH AN AMAZING VIDEO AND WHY? I just do not understand it.

Soy Boys are not funny! Jordan Peterson's diet had great effect on him and his family and he is a really smart guy that I would take advice from. In my experience , soy promotes hormonal imbalances and as far as I know is bad for men and for women for the same reason, it stops the absorption of Iron.I might be wrong but if soy was great, why does it need so much advertising? My friend was overweight and in her 40's and she started a slimming diet based on replacing 2 meals a day with soy based protein shake from Herbalife and she became very active and eating salads. After less than 2 years since she started the diet she was diagnosed with colon cancer. I am not saying the slimming diet was the cause but never heard somebody getting sick from salad.
